What is root canal treatment

A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat and save a tooth with an infected or inflamed pulp, the soft tissue at its core. The treatment removes the diseased pulp, cleans and shapes the inside of the tooth, and then fills and seals the space to prevent re-infection. This process allows you to keep your natural tooth and eliminate pain.

Common root canal treatment Procedures

Numbing the area: A local anesthetic is administered to ensure the patient is comfortable and does not feel pain during the procedure.
Creating an opening: The dentist creates a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber and root canals.
Cleaning the canals: Using small dental instruments, the infected pulp and nerve tissue are removed. The root canals are then thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and shaped.
Filling the tooth: The cleaned canals are filled and sealed with a biocompatible, rubber-like material called gutta-percha, along with an adhesive cement.
Restoring the tooth: In most cases, a temporary filling is placed. During a follow-up appointment, the tooth is permanently restored with a filling or a crown to protect it and restore its full function.
